Here’s the actual configuration I purchased. It may help to take a look at my “The Hunt for a New Laptop” post to understand some of my requirements when I purchases this laptop. With that in mind, I’ll do my best to write this from the perspective of a very picky geek user, because I’m probably not typical. On the other hand, the “typical” user doesn’t always have a lot to compare it to. I’m always a little skeptical when I personally read reviews like this, when the reviewer is the owner of the product (not just on loan for the review.) Sometimes they are really good because you get the perspective of a “typical” user. I have this problem as well with at least Latitude D620 and D430 (probably all computers using the Sigmatel driver). Now that I’ve had the notebook for a few weeks, I’ve had enough time to evaluate and write a review. I think you should push Dell on this one as well, provided are detailed repro steps: I first experienced it like seven months ago but thought it would be fixed in later drivers, guess I was wrong! I have an open issue with Dell regarding this and I have emailed IDT, which have taken over the Audio department from Sigmatel. The problem is that by following the below instructions, the Sigmatel audio card in Latitude laptops appears in the Device Manager as installed. But when you try to change the sound volume in the system tray (lower right corner) the message "No Audio Output Device is installed" appears, meaning the soundsystem in Vista cannot actually find the card altough it appears to be installed correctly. You get sound if you install Vista with the RTM DVD and then apply the same driver.

The problem seems to be when integrating the driver.ġ.
